The NW PA Electronics Manfacturing/Service Industry Partnership Launches WebsitePartnership creates website to raise awareness about “environmentally compliant” manufacturing legislation
Erie, PA – Many Pennsylvania manufacturing companies are at risk of their American-made products being rejected by European companies.
The NW PA Electronics Manufacturing/Service Industry Parntership (EMSIP), comprised of CEOs of electronic manufacturing companies in Northwest and North Central Pennsylvania, has launched a website to create awareness among manufacturing companies of the European Union’s (EU) two directives requiring the manufacturers of electronic products to control the use of certain substances in their products and make product manufacturers responsible for the recovery and recycling of their products.
“The new website, www.emsip.com, contains very pertinent information for all electronic manufacturing companies that ship American-made electrical and electronic products to the European marketplace,” said Nick Schultz, Director of Workforce and Community Development for Strategy Solutions, Inc. (SSI), facilitator for the Partnership, “Many state-wide resources exist to assist Pennsylvania companies in complying with these new guidelines.”
The Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances Directive and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive commonly known as RoHS and WEEE were enacted by the EU in 2003. The legislation, commonly referred to as “lead-free legislation” restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment including lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, pbb (flame retardant) and pdbe (flame retardant).
China has enacted a law, commonly referred to as China RoHS, which imposes the same requirements as the European RoHS Directive with a sustantial increase in the scope of products impacted and has imposed additional requirement beyond those required by the European RoHS.
According to Shultz, a free webinar on China RoHS will be held on Thursday, April 19th at 2 p.m. “The webinar is hosted by Design Chain Associates, international experts who will help identify resources to comply with the standards. Interested parties should log onto www.emsip.com to register.” Design Chain Associates expertise originally helped Northwest Pennsylvania Manufactures assess their RoHS/WEEE related risks at a series of successful workshops throughout the region in September of 2006.
Additional webinar dates & topics are scheduled as follows:
